At their core, Bureo is a team of ocean lovers and surfers. Having grown up in fishing communities along the Northeast, they hold a deep respect for sea-based livelihoods and a strong commitment to protecting the ocean that gives so much. Bureo was founded in 2013 with its first fishing-net collection program in Chile. Soon after, the team began producing the Minnow—the world’s first skateboard deck made from recycled fishing nets—shipping early orders from a garage studio in Redondo Beach, California. Over the years, Bureo has grown steadily, intentionally choosing partnerships at every step. Today, the company sources nets from 44 fishing communities across eight countries, and the team has expanded from three founders to more than 70 salaried employees who operate net collection hubs and make the impact of NetPlus® material possible. Bureo is proud to provide fishing communities with a more circular solution for end-of-life fishing nets, while empowering brands with a fully traceable recycled material that supports their sustainability goals.
