About Dr. Diva Amon
Excellence in Science and Exploration
Dr Diva Amon is a Trinidadian-British marine biologist, explorer, science communicator, and policy adviser dedicated to expanding understanding of the ocean’s least-known ecosystems and advancing evidence-based, equitable ocean stewardship. Diva’s research focuses on the deep ocean and high seas - remarkable and vast parts of the planet that few humans have ever seen - and on how human activities, including deep-sea mining, pollution, and climate change, are reshaping these fragile ecosystems. Her work contributes foundational scientific knowledge in regions where baseline data are scarce, yet major industrial and policy decisions are increasingly being made. She holds a PhD in ocean and earth science from the University of Southampton and has academic appointments at the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago. Diva has participated in scientific expeditions across the globe, from Antarctica to the deepest ocean trenches, and regularly ventures into the depths in submersibles, making her one of the few scientists to both study the high seas and deep ocean, and experience them firsthand. This lived experience informs both her research and her storytelling. Diva also advises governments and international bodies on ocean science and governance, and has contributed to high-level forums including the United Nations, the International Seabed Authority and the Nobel Dialogue. Her policy work is guided by a strong commitment to inclusive decision-making, particularly for Small Island Developing States and communities most closely tied to the ocean. As a National Geographic Explorer, Diva has appeared in and hosted major international television productions. She is known for her work on National Geographic’s series, Welcome to Earth, serving as the expert accompanying Will Smith into the ocean depths, as well as hosting National Geographic’s Shark Attack 360. A sought-after speaker, Diva delivers keynote talks and panel contributions for conferences, universities, festivals, companies, and public events worldwide. Her talks are grounded in rigorous science and delivered with clarity, warmth, and humour, connecting audiences to the hidden depths of the ocean and the choices shaping its future. Passionate about representation and access, Diva uses her research and communication to challenge who is seen as an explorer or scientist, inspire more equitable science and governance, and promote broader engagement with the ocean. She is also the Co-Founder and Director of SpeSeas, a Caribbean-based non-profit expanding marine science, education, and advocacy. Diva’s work is driven by curiosity, boldness, and a deep love for the ocean’s hidden worlds.
